Fragment of an Ivory Box
This lovely little object is a fragment of an ivory box -- it really is little, just under 7cm long, so it would've been quite a delicate piece of work. The two holes in it are original, they are where the dowels to hold it onto the other sides of the box would've been fitted. It's around 5,000 years old, and dates to the beginning of the 1st Dynasty of Ancient Egypt.

On it are the names of one of the very first kings of the whole of Egypt and his queen -- Hor-Aha's serekh (topped with a falcon) is on the right, and the two symbols to the left read Bener-ib. There's some debate around whether Hor-Aha or Narmer was the king who was remembered by (much) later Egyptians as Menes, the semi-legendary founder of the country. So he's either first or second real king of the Two Lands.
